I’ve been ranking or otherwise talking about Super Bowl commercials for years now. But the prospect of ranking them again just feels so daunting. Still, I wanted to share some thoughts, so here I am!
First off, did this year set a record for most celebrities appearing in Super Bowl commercials while simultaneously attending the Big Game (Beyoncé, Post Malone, Usher)? If you were to tell me that the previous record was zero, I’d believe it.
Anyway, my mom’s favorite spot was the pickleball one with the E*TRADE babies, and she wanted everyone to know that.
I’m always eager to see new trailers, and this year’s crop featured some Wicked-ly memorable visuals. I’m pretty sure the Despicable Me 4 spot only aired during the pregame, but of course I’m super-duper excited for that as well.
The M&Ms ad with the sighing folks also made an impression, partly because it was one of the first of the night, but also because my personality just vibes so well with that chocolate-filled crew. And I’ll also shout out Ah-nuld and Danny Devito for State Farm: We’re in Good (Manos: The) Hands (of Fate) with them!
But as for my #1 of 2024? Well, maybe it took me a little too long to realize than it should have, but it was of course Mr. Michael Cera for CeraVe! It was, after all, directed by one of my favorite comedy duos.
