Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.
Hello, mother (Maya Rudolph). Hello, father (Lorne Michaels?). Here I am, reviewing SNL a little later than I usually do, as I was at a destination wedding on Saturday and then traveling by plane, train, and automobile on Sunday. But as of Monday evening, I’ve finally watched the 19th episode of Season 49! It featured showbiz veterans in the form of Ms. Maya Rudolph and Misters Vampire Weekend.
Instead of sticking to a discrete theme for this review, I’m just going to provide quick thoughts for each sketch and segment, but still with my signature wacky style.
A Special Mother’s Day Message: They’ve certainly had special Mother’s Day segments before, but I guess this is the sort of thing you’ve got to update regularly for each new generation.
Maya Rudolph’s Monologue: This Ain’t the First Time Alert: No indeed, SNL has a LONG history of being influenced by nightclub subcultures.
Hot Ones: I bet it would’ve been really cool if Conan O’Brien (or someone doing an impression of him) had shown up in the middle of this sketch, in recognition of his recent viral appearance on the actual Hot Ones. He’s not the guy you think of first when you hear Beyoncé, so it would have been a way to mix things up.
please don’t destroy: Instagram Explore: “A bunch of butts” is a wonderful phrase.
End of School Message: “Tssidahn” is miraculous. (Also great was Kenan’s pronunciation of “nonbinary asexuals.”)
British Cavemen: Why was James’ host character wearing a denim shirt?
Sleepover Pickup: So was the daughter embarrassed, or not? Life don’t make no sense!
Vampire Weekend, “Gen-X Cops”: Baller move by Ezra Koenig to sing while sitting next to the piano. I’m not sure if he could have pulled that off so indubitably earlier in his career.
Weekend Update: The Jokes: It was kinda funny when Michael Che said “I don’t think that’s gonna make the show.” Did he forget that the show is live? Lol!
Weekend Update: RFK Jr.’s Brain Worm: What was in the worm’s drink?
Weekend Update: A Woman Who Says She’s Not Mad: You know, this is one of those characters where I really want to know more about her life when she’s not on screen.
Coffee Commercial: When you need 500 different pronunciations in one sketch, Maya Rudolph is the one you call.
Vampire Weekend, “Capricorn”: It seemed that the lyrics of this song referenced past Vampire Weekend song(s).
National Nurses Week: I can’t resist a dog in sunglasses.
Lanzetti’s Lawn Care: I bet these guys would seem more okay if we just got to know them a little bit more.
You may have noticed that Season 49 is almost Season 40-done. So I’ll be back soon in the same Bat-time (or sooner actually), same Bat-blog, to wrap it up with Jake “Joe Geronimo” Gyllenhaal and Sabrina Carpenter.
