Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.

Happy Anniversary! It’s the 50th season of our favorite show, and I for one am going to celebrate by continuing to wackily review every episode of Saturday Night Live.

The very first episode of this landmark season was hosted by the Jean-tacular Jean Smart and musical guested by the Jelly-licious Jelly Roll. As for me, I was out and about visiting family this weekend, so I finished this episode much later than usual. So please forgive me if this review feels a little sleepy!

Anyway, because I took a weekend vacay, I’m going to review each sketch by asking the question: is this a good sketch to watch while visiting family?

ABC World News Tonight: This is a good sketch to watch with family, because chances are they’ll recognize who’s being impression-ed, and maybe even also who the cameos are.

Jean Smart’s Monologue: This is a good monologue to watch with family, since Jean Smart has been around for so long.

The $100,000 Pyramid: This is a good sketch to watch with family, because it’s so silly, and a lot of the gags are visual, so they can land even if everyone in the room is talking.

Spirit Halloween: This is an okay commercial parody to watch with family, assuming that you have a family who celebrates spooky season in this century.

Textbook Writer: This might be an awkward sketch to watch with family, but there should be more sketches that revolve around teaching math (or lack thereof).

Jelly Roll, “Liar”: A Jelly Roll performance can be solid family viewing, especially if everyone knows his inspirational backstory.

Weekend Update: Weekend Update is a decent choice for family viewing as well, at least my family, and perhaps yours as well, because believe it or not, a lot of people are familiar with the news.
Weekend Update: Eric Adams: This Update guest segment is maybe an okay choice to watch with your family, so long as they like turkey-based humor.
Weekend Update: Moo Deng: Bowen Yang is pretty popular with lots of people, so I wouldn’t be surprised if him dressed as a hippo works like gangbusters around the family room TV.

History of the Sitcom: As long as your family is familiar with the basics of TV history, this can work as solid family-viewing sketch comedy.

the talk talk show with charli XCX: Chances are at least one family member will be confused.

Jelly Roll, “Winning Streak”: The same thing I said about the first Jelly Roll performance also applies here.

The Real Housewives of Santa Fe: I’m not sure if this is a good sketch to watch with your family or not, I’m just concerned about all those fajitas going to waste.

All right, we won’t have to wait very long for the second episode of Season 50, as it will be happening on October 5 with Nate Bargatze and Coldplay. Hopefully I’ll be less tired while watching/reviewing that!
