Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.
Happy Middle of October, Everybody! I hope you’ve been spending plenty of time with your boos.
Anyway, I’m here to review the 971st episode of Saturday Night Live, which just so happens to also be the third episode of the 50th season. Stevie Nicks was the musical guest for the second time ever, but the first time in more than 40 years. As for the host, well, that was Ariana Grande, who’s now in the rarefied territory of having been the host and musical guest of the same episode, the host but NOT the musical guest of the same episode, and the musical guest but NOT the host of the same episode.
You may have noticed that Ms. Grande was promoting her starring role in the upcoming film Wicked, which is based on a well-known stage musical, which was in turn based on a novel, which was in turn inspired by another novel. With all that in mind, I’ll be reviewing each sketch in this episode by saying something like “That was wicked…” (Please feel free to imagine me doing so in a Bah-ston accent.)
The Source with Kaitlan Collins: Steve Harvey’s treatment of Tim Walz was pretty wicked, but in a well-natured way.
Ariana Grande’s Monologue: It was wicked of Ariana to imply that she wasn’t going to sing this episode but then proceed to belt out some notes in pretty much every sketch. (Don’t worry, I’m joking about being upset by this.)
Bridesmaid Speech: Why are there so many SNL sketches about sensitive guys being treated wickedly by their significant others?
Midnight Matinee: My Best Friend’s House: That VHS collection sure looked wicked pissah (initially in one way, but then in another way).
Charades: The way that Ariana said, “Oh. Well, that wasn’t necessary.” was totally wicked.
Celine Dion UFC Promo: The Quebecoise chanteuse may just be the best impression in Ariana’s repertoire. It’s the kind of thing that makes you go, “…Wicked.”
Stevie Nicks, “The Lighthouse”: Oh yeah, after all these years, Stevie can still rock it like a Wicked Witch.
Weekend Update: The Jokes: Michael Che has treated Colin Jost much more wickedly in previous episodes, but not so much this time. And honestly? That was pretty wicked of him.
Weekend Update: Monica, Happy Amazon Employee: “Can’t get a STD if he’s got a USB” is a wicked observation.
Weekend Update: Noel and Liam Gallagher: What a pair of wicked brothers; also, I laughed when Colin said “White Boy of the Year Award.”
Castrati: Utilizing modern Italian American accents in Renaissance Italy is a pretty wicked approach.
Stevie Nicks, “Edge of Seventeen”: I noticed that I have similar dance moves as Stevie while singing, so now I’M feeling wicked!
Jennifer Coolidge for Maybelline: The Jennifers looked like they were dressed as Fembots, and that’s only one of many ways in which this sketch felt pretty dang wicked.
The Hotel Detective: It’s wicked that this sketch punches harder than some actual Twilight Zone episodes.
Okay, everybody, thanks for reading once again! It’s gonna be 4 new episodes in a row when Michael John Douglas (aka Michael Keaton) is joined by Billie Eilish.
