Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.
Congratulations to all those 50s out there! Yes, the rumors are true, Saturday Night Live has now fully and undeniably completed its 50th season. In the course of doing so, it featured a finale guest lineup of 7-time host Scarlett Johansson and three-time musical guest Bad Bunny. So in honor of ScarJo, I’ll be reviewing each sketch and segment by metrics of seven. So for example, I might convey a grade of “3 out of 5 Seven Deadly Sins.”
Trump in the Middle East: I give this cold opening 5 out of 7 OPECs.
Scarlett Johansson’s Monologue: ScarJo and some cast members sing and respond to a few audience Q’s; they’ve done this sort of monologue about 77,000 times on SNL (that’s the joke).
Channel 4 New York City News: ScarJo plays a news anchor who keeps making inappropriately silly puns about serious stories; I give this sketch a grade of “7:00” because that’s the time Jeopardy! is on in NYC. That is to say, if this anchor could be on TV at 7:00 PM, that would be acceptable, because then nobody would have to be exposed to her snafus.
please don’t destroy: First Class: ScarJo and the pdd boys get on a plane for a New Jersey vacay. Did they say “Newark” or “New-ark?” All trips through the Garden State should last 70 minutes.
Grizzly Pear (Couples at the Bar): Two bilingual dudes speak Spanish so that their girlfriends can’t understand their doubts about them; if I had a nickel for every time this happened to me, I wouldn’t have 7 nickels.
Bowen’s Still Straight: Bowen Yang pretends to be heterosexual again for the sake of comedy; could this possibly be Bowen’s seventh most popular recurring sketch? Discuss.
Elevator Ride: Mike Myers has stressful flashbacks when he gets caught in an elevator with Kanye West. This bit probably would’ve hit even harder if Ye had been played by himself instead of Kenan Thompson. But even if SNL tried to call him 777 times in 2025, I’m not sure he would ever pick up.
Bad Bunny, “NUEVAYoL”: B.B. performs his song that fits the location; my favorite part was how 7 guys recreated the famous Lunch atop a Skyscraper photograph.
Weekend Update: The Jokes: Michael and Colin tell memorable crack-us-ups about the Mandela Effect, Stephen Hawking, and strokes. And of course, there’s a Joke Swap, with ScarJo joining in the fun. I give them a grade of 777 out of 777, because I want the Joke Swap to last into infinity.
Weekend Update: Ego Nwodim: Miss Eggy is back to talk about airplane food; I’m in seventh heaven when the puns are this killer.
Penelope’s Secret: Intimacy coordinators on a movie set try to make sense of lesbian intimacy; I give this sketch a grade of 7 out of 6 on the Kinsey scale.
TV Takes: Cast members on some random TV show are interviewed: one of them gets softballs, whereas the ladies are torn to shreds. There were exactly seven performers in this sketch, which is often a satisfying cast count.
Bad Bunny ft. RaiNao, “PERFuMITO NUEVO”: B.B. and RaiNao perform their duet in a public bathroom set, complete with a mirror/window combo. I wonder if any of them had to go Number 7?
Victorian Ladies at Lunch: Carnivorous women of the past eat unusual concoctions; I give this final sketch of the season a grade of 3-7 Hours on the Toilet.
Thank you everyone for reading another season’s worth of reviews from me! I hope they drove you into a gourd. I’ll be back in a week or so for my overall thoughts about Season 50, and then Lorne willing, we’ll all be back in the fall for Saturday Night Live Season 51.
