Inspired by the latest AV Club Q&A and the upcoming Cupid Day, here are my favorite TV ships of all time. Generally, I only ship characters who legitimately could get together in-universe. Also, I prefer couplings that are actually healthy for the couples; pairings of folks who are wrong for each other can be entertaining, but rooting for them is something different than shipping (at least the kind that I practice). Organized by category, here are my top choices.
PROBABLY NOT GOING TO HAPPEN
-Barry-Caitlin, The Flash
THEY’RE TOGETHER, RIGHT?!
-Jeff-Annie, Community – My absolute favorite, and one of the most controversial, inspiring equally impassioned cheers and jeers.
-Fitz-Simmons, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – I stopped watching S.H.I.E.L.D. about halfway through Season 1, but then I picked it back up when I found out these two were going to kiss. So there’s about 40 episodes I haven’t seen. Whenever I see FitzSimmons clips from those episodes, I think, “Wait. They did all that, and they’re not together?”
PLEASE LET THEM STAY TOGETHER!
-Oliver-Felicity, Arrow
THEIR ROMANCE WAS ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF THEIR SHOW, SO THEY DO NOT FIT IN THE OTHER CATEGORIES
-Peggy-Stan, Mad Men
-Desmond-Penny, Lost – Sonya Walger may have only appeared in 13 episodes, but that was enough to make this ship more impactful than most others.
(SEEMINGLY) INEVITABLE
-Cory-Topanga, Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World
-April-Andy, Parks and Recreation – These two were hardly a sure thing at the beginning, but oddly enough, they were perfect for each other, and the show wisely ran with it.
STUCK IN FLUX
-Nick-Jess, New Girl – The writers seem to be behind these two, but there appear to be mental blocks even when Zooey Deschanel isn’t on a leave of absence.
-Abed-Rachel, Community – Thanks to Brie Larson’s unavailability, it was unclear for an entire season whether or not these two were actually still a couple.
-Tessa-Ryan, Suburgatory – Last we saw these two, they were passionately reuniting. Then their show got cancelled.
MARRIED COUPLES
When pairings begin and/or spend the majority of their show married, I do not think they can technically be “shipped,” at least not in the sense in which the term is usually applied. But it is still fun to revel in their awesomeness.
-Bob-Linda, Bob’s Burgers
-Frankie-Mike, The Middle
