For my ten favorite movies of 2019, I have decided to ascribe each of them an emotion or a way of looking at the world that reflects how they made me feel to my core.

But first! – here are some other movies from the past year that I quite enjoyed that didn’t quite make the top 10:

Apollo 11, Avengers: Endgame, Fighting with My Family, Hail Satan?, Hustlers, Isn’t It Romantic, The Irishman, Little Women, Ma, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, The Mustang, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Rocketman, Toy Story 4, The Two Popes

Now for the Top 10 … (Drumroll, if you please)

10. Knives Out: STRAPPED-IN AND ALONG FOR THE RIDE – Here’s a wonderful idea for a murder mystery: give away the answer at the beginning … and then add more surprises along the way!

9. Blinded by the Light: NEW PERSPECTIVES – I once was a fan of Bruce Springsteen’s music, but now I know it on a much deeper level, and knowing it intimately means truly seeing my neighbors.

8. Us: INWARD/OUTWARD – A fable ripping apart at the seams in the rightest way possible.

7. Parasite: WONDER UNDERCOVER – There are a lot of doors in life, both literal and metaphorical. You genuinely don’t know what’s on the other side until you walk through them.

6. Happy Death Day 2 U: GALAXY BRAIN – Thank the heavens that a gleefully over-the-top sci-fi horror riff on Groundhog Day is at its core a lovely treatise on how to be a decent human being.

5. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: FORGIVENESS – Our stories as human beings are the stories of how we find our ways into each other’s hearts.

4. Uncut Gems: INVIGORATING STRESS – I don’t think the Passover/NBA playoffs timeline quite matches up to reality, but I can overlook that for the sake of a relentless adrenaline roller coaster.

3. Greener Grass: AESTHETIC TICKLING – A vision of suburbi-urbia that I’d love to simmer in regularly.

2. Ready or Not: VIOLENTLY FREE IMAGINATION – Eat the rich? Naw, let ’em eat themselves.

1. Under the Silver Lake: PURE UNCUT INTRIGUE – We all have our own conspiracy theory journey to go on.
