I’ve been noticing something lately: there are a lot of new movies at the multiplex! We might even be back to a pre-pandemic output volume. How else to explain me spending the same weekend catching the likes of both Chevalier and Renfield?

Bloody fun (CREDIT: Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)
Just a year ago, modest releases were still often getting shuttered straight to streaming. Or if they did manage to go theatrical, you could probably wait a month or two before their runs ended. But now these are back to being the types of movies that could easily be gone after just a couple of weeks!
So maybe it’s just the current state of affairs swaying my perception, but I can’t help but declare that I’m very grateful to have seen Joseph Bologne fiddle that violin and Robert Montague Renfield finally break free of his toxic relationship.
Grades:
Chevalier: 100 Revolutions out of 150 Concertos
Renfield: I Did Not Know Ben Schwartz or Shohreh Aghdashloo Were in This, But Those Were Happy Surprises
