I’ve been reviewing every episode of Saturday Night Live since Season 36 debuted in 2010, and my season recaps go back even farther when I was posting them on my MySpace and Facebook blogs! So I often find myself in the mood to switch up my reviewing formats. With that in mind, as I look back at Season 48, I decided I would peruse each episode on the SNL Archives website to remind myself what made an impression and then share that with you all in a bit of a freewheelin’ approach.

So Live from jmunney.com, It’s Saturday Night Season 48!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fresh off Top Gun: Maverick, Miles Teller kicked things off on Episode 1 alongside Kendrick Lamar. Wow, he hosted less than a year ago? That somehow feels like it’s from another era! We turned emerald when Brendan Gleeson arrived for Episode 2, while WILLOW killed it with the bald punk-rock look. That outing featured a rollicking good time in the New Cast Advice sketch, with Molly Kearney arriving on the scene like a Bomb dot com.

Next up was a Hot Girl Forever as Megan Thee Stallion pulled off double duty. (Hee-hee, “duty.”) Now be a dear and please re-watch that deer sketch. Damn, I didn’t know that Jack Harlow was at that point in his career when he could also pull off host/musical guest double duty. I guess I don’t know Jack, apparently. Anyway, the AA Meeting was a fun singalong.

Amy Schumer also hosted this season, in case you were asking, “Hey, did Amy Schumer host this season?” She was joined by Steve Lacy on the mic. Fun Fact: I really, really like Steve’s music! Dave Chappelle showed up next, and Black Star emerged from hibernation, but I was more enthralled by please don’t destroy’s Election Night short. Molly Kearney strikes again!

It was the year of Keke Palmer, and that most definitely included a stop by Studio 8H. Pregnancy reveal, come and get it! And ain’t it something, we now live in a world in which Mr. Kel Mitchell has graced the SNL stage.

Marty Short + Steve Marty = a Christmastime treat. We love the Monologue Purple, Steve. And then hot DAMN, Brandi Carlile brought the house down! Well, we still had one more episode to go before the actual December 25, so Austin Butler butted his way in with Lizzo in tow. Thank you for everything, Cecily!

Happy New Year! Or, rather, happy 20 days after the New Year, because that was precisely when Aubrey Plaza hosted. And wouldn’t you know it, Sam Smith had some tricks up their sleeve. Next up: would Michael B. Jordan B our Lil Baby? No, but he would B. the host, and Lily Baby would B. the musical guest. During that episode, I thought it was pretty wacky when Sarah Sherman’s face took a trip, but then we trekked down to King Brothers Toyota, and let me tell ya: it was even wackier!

Is Pedro Pascal the most omnipresent celebrity currently? His time on SNL with Coldplay would certainly be a point in his favor in that regard! Anyway, The Big Hollywood Quiz struck a chord, and we got to meet Lisa from Temecula.

Did you know Woody Harrelson joined the Five-Timers Club this season? And that Jack White was also a musical guest for the fifth time* that same episode?! (*including his initial White Striped appearance) Anyway, I appreciated the Cologuard commercial. Cologuard would probably be useful in the Most Beautiful Gym in the World. Travis Kelce/sea Ballerini Marched us along next, and Bowen Yang put him to good use. And don’t have a cow, man, but I still can’t get over Garrett from Hinge. Punkie Johnson and Mikey Day’s Oscar preview might’ve been my favorite Weekend Update segment of the season!!!!!

Jenna Ortega wasn’t even alive in 1975, yet somehow the musical guest of her SNL debut was The 1975. (Is this the first time in the history of SNL that the MG has been a year during which SNL existed?) When you do a sketch about an exorcism, Shawdn’t it always be as hilarious as it was in this episode?

Next up was the Quinta Brunson/Lil Yachty episode, and OMGod, it made me LOLOLO so much! The Traffic Altercation was so hilarious! The Midwife sketch was so hilarious! The Bosses sketch with the Penis Brothers was so hilarious! And Lil Yachty’s making psych rock now? I’ll take two!

Molly Shannon returned to host along with the Jonas Brothers? Don’t get me started

And finally, the writers strike cut things short, but we still had time for Ana de Armas and Karol G. And in terms of the very last sketch of the season, they kinda nailed it.

Pending the resolution of the writers strike, we’ll Peacock you next season!
