Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Jenna Ortega/The 1975

One Thousand, Nine Hundred, Seventy-Five Musical Guests! How do you measure music in an episode? (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

The fifteenth episode of the forty-eighth season of Saturday Night Live was hosted by Jenna Ortega with musical guest The 1975. This occurred on my post-birthday weekend, which is good, because I enjoy watching new SNL this time of year. Indeed, I love watching new SNL at any time of the year, including around the anniversary of my birth.

Since Jenna Ortega is one of the current stars of the Scream franchise, I will be reviewing each sketch of this episode in ALL CAPS.

Jeff’s Wacky Homophonic SNL Review: Travis Kelce/Kelsea Ballerini

Kelce, meet Kelsea. Kelsea, meet Kelce. (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

The March 4, 2023 edition of Saturday Night Live was hosted by Super Bowl-winning football professional Travis Kelce, with the musical guest being country performer Kelsea Ballerini. It was the first time on the venerable sketch institution for both of them, a huge departure from last week’s episode.

In case you were wondering, yes, “Kelce” and “Kelsea” are pronounced the same, so therefore I just had to include homophones in my thoughts on every one of this episode’s sketches.

Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Woody Harrelson/Jack White

Five! Five-Timer SNL! (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

Woo-hoo! This is Woody Harrelson’s fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live. His first was all the way back on November 18, 1989. And guess what? It’s also musical guest Jack White’s fifth time! (That does include his appearance with ex-wife Meg when the White Stripes were the MG back in October 2002.) So there’s really no other option for me besides reviewing the sketches of this episode with five (5) words each!

Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Pedro Pascal/Coldplay

Brr! This episode was very Chile. (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

I’ve seen Pedro Pascal on my TV more than once. And now I’m seeing him again! That exclamation point is because as of February 4, 2023, he’s an SNL host. And nobody can ever take that away from him!

Coldplay’s the musical guest, but that’s nothing new.

This is the first episode of February, so to celebrate, I’m going to review each sketch according to the format “I ❤️ (something).”

Nom nom nom nom nom! That’s the sound of being hungry for new SNL. I’m never not hungry. Luckily, this weekend Michael B. Jordan and Lil Baby both made their debuts, so there was plenty of fresh comedy and music to check out.

Earlier this season, I reviewed an episode by simply transcribing the notes I wrote in my notebook while watching the episode (which I was able to do after clicking “Play” on my DVR). And I loved that so much that I decided to do it again!

THIS! IS! A! REVIEW! OF! THE! FIRST! NEW! SNL! OF! 2023! Now, as you may be aware, during the month of January, we often say “Happy New Year!” to each other. So, with that in mind, I’m going to review each sketch of this episode according to the format “Happy (Fill in the Blank).” All right, let’s get to it!
Happy New Aubrey Plaza!
Happy New Sam Smith!

Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Austin Butler/Lizzo

It’s Bad Christmas O’Clock (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

But the truth is, Austin Butler was the host of the last new episode of Saturday Night Live of 2022. (Because “But” is part of his name.) And incidentally, Lizzo joins the “Musical Guest Twice in a Calendar Year” Club.

For this episode, since it is the Christmas show, I will be reviewing each sketch by answering the question “Would Santa Clause like this?” in the vein of the Billy on the Street game “Would Drew Barrymore Like That?”

An Announcement from Donald Trump: I don’t think Santa Claus would like this very much. I’m pretty sure he sees a lot of naughtiness in NFTs and the rest of the digital financial space.

Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Steve Martin Short/Brandi Carlile

The long and short of it is, the December 10, 2022 episode of Saturday Night Live has been hosted by Steve Martin (a long fellow) AND Martin Short (his last name is “Short”). And what’s the story, morning glory (because I watched the show on Sunday morning)? Brandi Carlile is the musical guest! I believe that this lineup is worth the price of admission.

Because this episode had two guests, I will be reviewing each sketch with two words each.

Score! The host of this particular Saturday Night Live episode is Keke Palmer. Sounds like we’re in for a treat. And the musical guest is SZA. That’s pronounced “SIZZ-uh.” She makes songs that are sizzling.

Since this is the first new episode of SNL after Thanksgiving 2022, I’m going to review each sketch by revealing what I’m thankful for from each of them.

Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Dave Chappelle/Black Star

We can’t see Yasiin’s face (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

It’s November 2022, and it’s time to talk about an SNL episode hosted by Dave Chappelle with musical guest Black Star. The latter is a hip-hop duo made up of Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Talib Kweli, while the former is an oft-funny comedian who’s unfortunately now more often nowadays making headlines for making transphobic jokes on his comedy specials. So it feels a little tone-deaf to book him now, even though he’s been a perfectly hilarious SNL host in the past. We’re not going to be able to figure all that out right here right now, obviously (although it would be nice if Dave came out and said something along the lines of “Maybe I missed the mark”!), but it feels weird not to at least acknowledge it.

Anyway, for this review, I’m going to provide a simple description of my emotional response to each sketch.
