For this latest annual cinematic Top 10 list, I decided to mix it up a bit and not focus too much on the ranking order. So instead, I’ve listed this decalogue in alphabetical order, along with some thoughts about the impressions they made on me.

(If you DO want to know the order that I’d rank them in, feel free to scroll ahead to the bottom for the big reveal.)

All of Us Strangers: This movie felt like the dreams I have where my dead loved ones come and visit. That’s an irresistible formula.

American Fiction: I was very excited to see American Fiction because the trailer was hilarious. And then I actually saw it, and it was hilarious, but also really touching. Woo-hoo!

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.: The world could always use plenty of Margaret Simon Energy. I honestly feel that we’re better off now that this movie exists.

Blackberry: I’m so proud of Matt Johnson, Jay Baruchel, and Glenn Howerton for bringing this forgotten piece of history to vivid, angry life.

Beau Is Afraid: Sometimes you’re a little wary of going to see a three-hour movie, but then also sometimes you come out of it thanking the heavens that you spent 180 minutes hanging out with Beau Wasserman.

The Holdovers: The Holdovers looked like a fastball right down the middle for everyone involved. And, well, they hit a home run.

M3GAN: I was hooked and cracking up from the very first frame, and the entire rest of my 2023 was viewed through a M3GAN Lens.

Oppenheimer: I’m not always super-duper unbearably excited for the latest Christopher Nolan flick. But then I go and see it, and I’m like, “Oh yeah. That’s why he’s one of my favorite directors.”

Past Lives: Celine Song’s debut feature just settled into my soul like an old, eternal friend.

Poor Things: I can’t shake off Poor Things, what with its commanding lead performance that has imprinted indelibly on my mind.
