I recently had the pleasure of seeing three different movies that all had me sputtering “What the heck is going on?” to varying degrees and to varying ends. Specifically, I’m talking about the deadly black comedy Over Your Dead Body, the pop star phantasmagoria Mother Mary, and a monstrous reimagining in the form of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.

I was prepared for the lethality of Over Your Dead Body‘s premise, which is not necessarily my bailiwick, but considering my historical affinity for its two main stars (Segel/Weaving) and especially its director (J. Taccone), I figured I would be in good hands. So when it kept going rough and mean, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Ummm, what the heck is going on?” But then somehow against all odds, it had a rather sweet ending. So that was pretty cool.

As for Mother Mary, the buildup to seeing it was a full-on unbroken tease of “What the heck is going on?” So when the movie itself was much the same, this wasn’t exactly disarming in any way. But considering director David Lowery, I thought there might be room for some transcendence. Instead, it was just displacement compounded upon displacement.

At this point, I should note that I was particularly tired seeing those first two flicks, OYDB because it had been raining all day and MM because I’d had blood drawn at the doctor’s office a few hours earlier. So yes, I was nodding off in the theater during both of those.

Now with something like Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, the expectation is that it will try to one-up itself with a series of “What the heck is going on?” moments. And those instances of grossness and transgression were certainly there. Ergo, this means that everything was more or less in its right place by the genre’s standards. So not too surprising, but kind of reassuring in its lack of reassurance.
