Super Troopers 3 is set to arrive in theaters on August 7, and I’m going to review it quite differently than how I generally review the attractions on the silver screen. Specifically, I shall initially focus on the first third of the movie and then speculate how the rest of the flick might go. Then on August 7 or later, I am going to return with Part 2 of the review and assess the rest of it in light of my speculation.

First, I must admit that I’ve never seen either Super Troopers or Super Troopers 2. But I’ve always been upfront about my belief that you can jump right into a franchise at whatever sequel point you like. Anyway, I’ve gleaned from cultural osmosis that these films about a wacky group of law enforcement agents come courtesy of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. I may have thought that they were a Canadian crew, but now I realize that while they’re close to the border, they’re decidedly American as Vermont state troopers (so still a bit maple-flavored).

ST3 opens with a wedding between the boorish Farva (Kevin Heffernan) and Sarita (Hannah Simone), sister of Farva’s fellow trooper Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar). Then we flashback to set up how we got to that point, with the main conflict established as Thorny doing his damnedest to break up this union that everyone else is inexplicably in favor of. Is a massive Bollywood-style dance number in the offing? That would certainly be a fair deal. But more than that, I’m getting the sense that the general vibe is that this movie is going to deliver a litany of gags that’ll have you going, “I may be laughing, but should we have left these jokes behind in 2001?”

I’m leaning towards the option that they still have a place in 2026, as everyone involved appears to be happy to play along and be in on the punchline together. How you react to someone saying “He puts the ‘hot’ in ‘Mahatma'” should give you a baseline sense for your tolerance to this approach. I imagine that this will add up to a mix of groans and exhaustion amidst the guffaws and plentiful coffee. But when it’s all anchored by a group of guys who have been working together for decades and know exactly how to push each other’s buttons in all the right and wrong ways, then there’s still room for it to be clicking and kicking.
