Cold Opening – Debate
I admired the tactic that they chose of Obama being distracted by forgetting his anniversary and the elevation.  But the execution didn’t match the premise. B

Daniel Craig’s Monologue
I admired this premise of an unusual monologue and appreciated Craig’s enthusiasm.  But the pacing was bizarrely off.  Didn’t he kill anyone in Layer Cake? B

Construction Workers
Oftentimes in scenes in which someone has trouble with saucy language, the joke is that he is unfamiliar with the subject.  But Craig’s character seemed familiar with lady parts; it’s just that his phrases were so strangely arranged.  It was something to make someone with a love of language swoon.  Bobby’s face was hilariously frozen in response to one of Craig’s lines.  The flashback to Dad getting shot was incredible. B+

Song Review – Ke$ha’s “Die Young”

The “we’re young”/”let’s live tonight like we’re dying” song is basically a full-fledged subgenre at this point, and Ke$ha makes it clear that she is not messing around with her effort by bringing in Nate Ruess of fun.,  who put out the latest hit in that subgenre.  Actually, the entire songwriting team on this track – Ruess, Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, Cirkut, and Ke$ha herself – is an all-star team of pop hitmakers.  Dr., Benny, and Cirkut are there for the perfect, electro-tinged pop beat; Nate is there for the inspirational, shout-along worthy tune, and Ke$ha throws in her unique brand of freaky come-ons.  If you love Ke$ha – and you animals know who you are – this will not disappoint you.  You’re probably listening to it ten times a day already.  But if you find her obnoxiously scuzzy, you may be happy to discover that she’s toned it down a bit – or really just corralled it into a more generally palatable package.  The last line of the chorus – “Let’s make the most of the night like we’re gonna die young” – is basically just an explanation of what this song is.  But the rest of the lyrics are more clever than that thesis statement.  “I hear your heart beat to the beat of the drums” calls attention to how polished the production is – the electronic whirrs and whoops are streamlined along with perfectly placed guitar chords to make it sound like actual music.  And “Oh what a shame that you came here with someone” provides a sense of bittersweet longing that makes an otherwise shallow tune that much more poignant.  And lest you think this is not actually Ke$ha, she throws in zingers like “Stripping down to dirty socks” and “That magic in your pants, it’s making me blush” to make it clear that this is her version of “we’re young”/”let’s live tonight like we’re dying.” A-

Cold Opening – Obama Town Hall Gathering
Everyone tried their best, but not much could elevate the stale premise of this sketch, although its existence was ultimately justified by the line, “One day all of you will be Bruce Willis, and you’ll realize that you were employed all along.” B-

Weekend Update
-The Jokes: Oh Seth, you’re at it again.  Being terrible, that is.  Although the joke about the sex doll was actually kind of funny. C-
-The Segments: -Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and His Translator: The gay/Jew bit provided a laugh or two, and … haven’t we seen this routine before? B-
-Cornel West: Not the most fully formed Kenan character (but more formed than most); thus Dr. West is best utilized in small roles such as in “Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Laughs,” but he is still worth something in a bit like this one. B
-The Girl You Wished You Hadn’t Started a Conversation with at a Party:  It is rare that every single line in an Update segment will kill – this was one of those times.  And yes, studio audience, you are correct, even the way Cecily took her phone out of her purse and put it back was funny. A

Replacement Refs
The laughs came from every possible space in this sketch: Tim, Kenan, Fred, and Bobby as the four replacement refs (each with his own quirk: yell “first down!,” throw the flag, blow the whistle, signal field goal while looking confused), the clever theme music and opening sequence, Bill and Taran committing to small roles, an appropriate shoutout (Ed Hochuli), and funny text that resulted in a new catchphrase (“No replacement refs were harmed…”). A
