Quicker than a Raye of Wiig (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.

Wowee zowee! Kristen Carroll Wiig has now hosted Saturday Night Live a handful of times! I remember when she was just a Saturday Night Live cast member. In her most recent outing as the master of ceremonies, she was joined by musical guest Raye. I’ve heard the name, but I don’t think I’ve heard the songs, so hopefully we’re in for some fun surprises.

Since this episode aired on the first weekend of April 2024, I will review each sketch by asking “Is this a good sketch for spring?”

March Madness Post-Game: Is this a good sketch for spring? Well, it is about the college basketball playoffs, and Charles Barkley’s gambling debt is piling up, which are very springly traditions.

Kristen Wiig’s Monologue: Is this a good sketch for spring? Well, wearing a 5-timer’s jacket isn’t exactly an appropriate spring outfit. It’s a much more sensible occasion for the holiday season.

Ticket to Ride: Is this a good sketch for spring? I feel like board games make more sense in winter, or during summer vacation. Spring’s a weird in-between option.

Pilates: Is this a good sketch for spring? Pilates is perennial, thankfully (or scarily) enough.

Trudy and Tootie: Is this a good sketch for spring? Well, it was obviously inspired by Mad Men, which often had its season premieres in the spring.

Retirement Party: Is this a good sketch for spring? Well, I would argue it’s the perfect season to retire!

Raye, “Escapism”: Is this a good musical performance for spring? Well, it makes me want to run out and declare how great Raye is, so I appreciate that it’s currently warm enough to do such a thing.

Weekend Update: The Jokes: Is this a good Weekend Update for spring? Yes, because it made me laugh several times
Weekend Update: The Earthquake: Is this a good sketch for spring? Yes, because I feel the earth move under my feet this time of the year, even when it’s not quaking.
Weekend Update: Aunt Linda: Is this a good sketch for spring? I imagine people like Aunt Linda have more energy (than usual) when the weather’s nice, but her personality is far from specific to this particular season.

Go-Kart Track: Is this a good sketch for spring? Maybe late spring, but in early April, it’s probably still a little too cool for go-karts.

Raye, “Worth It.”/”Let There Be Light”: Is this a good musical performance for spring? Honestly, it felt more like a smoky nightclub number on a wintry evening, but I’m not complaining.

Sonic Pioneers: Is this a good sketch for spring? Maybe on a Saturday night when there’s no major sports event on TV, but otherwise, the singing and dancing should really be taking place outside.

Okay, that’s enough Wiig-ing out for now. In just one week (or actually less than one week at this point), we’ll have another new episode with some returning favorites in the form of host Ryan Gosling and musical guest Chris Stapleton. And as usual, I’ll be there to chime in with a wacky reaction!
