Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.
Welcome to a review of the 3rd episode of the 52nd season of Saturday Night Live. I went on a little getaway for the holiday weekend, so I’m just gonna kind of wing it. Shane Gillis was the host, while Rosalía was the musical guest. They’ve both been here before. You guys know how this goes.
Pete Hegseth on the USS Lincoln: Colin Jost as the current defense secretary talks on a boat, and I’m left to wonder if everyone is drinking Fireball these days.
Shane Gillis’ Monologue: Shane goes into detail about hitting “fat rock bottom”, but I’m wondering who “Stephen” is, because he mentioned a friend with that name but then started talking about Theo Von instead.
Cop Talk: Stereotypically power-tripping police officers host a chat show; it goes about as stereotypically as you’d expect.
My Room Now: Like a lot of SNL sketches immediately following the first post-commercial live sketch, this is a pre-recorded music video. This one reminded me of what Pierce Hawthorne got up to in that Community episode where Annie moved in with Troy and Abed.
Green Eggs and Ham: Reimagining Seussian characters as scammers and hooligans is kinda clever, but the joke that made the biggest impression on me (“James Jonathan”) was more earthbound.
Innovation Nation: This sketch imagines the dawn of an era of shoes without leather, which is interpreted as an ideal way to avoid detection during a period of adultery. My favorite part was Kenan Thompson’s old-timey laugh.
Upfront Heating & Air Conditioning: Maybe all contractors should be paid in the form of Venmo for Pizza.
Rosalía, “Reliquia”: The singing lady was notably on her toes the whole time during this performance, which made me wonder if this was based on a well-known ballet.
Weekend Update: The Jokes: For yet another session in the past ten-plus years, Colin Jost and Michael Che crack wise about current events. As per usual, some of those cracks amused me more than others. On the high end were those about al Qaeda’s bribery and the lawn business in Louisiana.
Weekend Update: Kevin O’Leary: This correspondent piece boils down to: one of the sharks from Shark Tank cares more about money than other people, and ain’t them the breaks?
Weekend Update: A Mother Whose Babysitter Cancelled: It’s generally a good strategy for a rookie cast member to team up with an already beloved player.
Dying Mom: I guess everything worked out, didn’t it!
Rosalía, “Magnolias”: Is it safe to have all that stage rain pouring down? I sure hope so!
Chess Tournament: It never fails to amuse me when a high school sporting event is referred to as “the big game” without further specification.
If you need to take a break from live sketch comedy for the middle of October, the SNL scheduling team has you covered, as the next new episode isn’t expected to arrive until Halloween, with first-timer Inde Navarrette and second-timer Gracie Abrams filling the bill.
