For the Halloween* episode of 2026, SNL opted for an appreciably spooky booking. (*-Well, to be fully accurate, most of the episode aired on November 1 local time. But of course, SNL episodes are always identified by the date of their first 30 minutes.) Inde Naverrette is the breakout star of the buzziest horror hit of the year, so this episode is reminiscent of another outing from way back in Season 7 that started airing on October 31. Unlike Donald Pleasance, Inde isn’t in a movie literally called “Halloween”, but it’s close enough to get us in the mood.

Gracie Abrams completes the bill as the musical guest. As far as I know, she doesn’t have anything particularly horrifying in her discography.

In honor of the airdate, my Review Gimmick for this episode will consist of declaring if each segment is more of a Trick or a Treat. That’s not to say that one verdict is necessarily better than the other: there can be good, bad, or neutral versions of both. Here we go:

Welcome to a review of the 3rd episode of the 52nd season of Saturday Night Live. I went on a little getaway for the holiday weekend, so I’m just gonna kind of wing it. Shane Gillis was the host, while Rosalía was the musical guest. They’ve both been here before. You guys know how this goes.

Hello! And happy birthday to Dakota Mayi Johnson. Because the date that this review is posting (October 4) is in fact her birthday. Whereas, when she began hosting SNL for the third time, it was not quite her birthday (unless you were in Australia, I guess). But because SNL episodes typically extend beyond the stroke of midnight, it became her birthday at some point during the show.

I was not involved in any birthday celebrations this weekend, though I did have plenty of excitement by running a 5K on Sunday morning. I suppose that was about as exciting as watching the band Turnstile be hardcore on stage, which I mention of course because they were the musical guest on this episode.

As for my Review Gimmick, I shall once again Transcribe the Notes I Took While Watching the Episode.

Jeff’s Wacky SNL Season 52 Premiere Review: Jalen Brunson/KATSEYE

SNL in 5 (-ty 2)! (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

Let me let you in on a little secret (which is in fact not a secret at all, but rather publicly available information): reigning NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson was the official host of the Season 52 premiere of Saturday Night Live. It was an understandable booking, considering that 2026 was the first time that the New York Knickerbockers won the NBA championship since SNL has been on the air.

As for the musical guest that Brunson introduced, that’d be internationally flavored girl group KATSEYE. They don’t have any particular affiliation with the Knicks that I’m aware of, but they do seem to have achieved a noteworthy level of popularity.

Regarding the Review Gimmick for this episode, it will of course be Basketball-themed, so I’ll say things like “Baller,” “Slam Dunk”, or “4 out of 5 Basketballs.”
