Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.
For the fifth episode of the fifty-second season of Saturday Night Live, the talent booking team selected Druski as the host and The Strokes as the musical guest. I know the former mainly for his T-Mobile commercials, though apparently he’s also cultivated a reputation for being entertaining in his own right. Meanwhile, I know the latter mainly for their performances on SNL, as this is their fifth time, after all. That’s not to say I know them only through SNL. I also know them from hearing them on the radio and listening to their albums and singing at least one of their songs on Rock Band and at karaoke.
Now that we’ve established my familiarity with the guests, let’s move forward. My Review Gimmick for this episode shall be assessing each sketch and segment with One Word Each.
Democrat Post-Midterm Party: Self-aware.
Druski’s Monologue: Loose.
Washington in Focus: Incorrigible.
Dru Can See Everything: Remarkable.
Two Men Attempt to Make a Purchase at a Dominican Phone Store: Unnecessary.
Birthday Girl: Excessive.
myCornerGuy: Mixed-up.
The Strokes, “Lonely in the Future”: Restless.
Weekend Update: The Jokes: Flipped.
Weekend Update: Elon Musk: Burnt.
Weekend Update: Two People Who Just Hooked Up: Shaken.
Proposal: Grand.
Wedding Photographers: Unflappable.
The Strokes, “Going Shopping”: Victorious.
Golden Age of Hip Hop: Clear-eyed.
And now we come to the part of the review where I’m happy to get a little more detailed. There was assuredly a mix of interesting ideas on display, and as usual, that is enough to keep me watching week in and week out. And that is what I shall do next Saturday, when the veteran lineup of John Mulaney and Phoebe Bridgers takes center stage.
