Other Mommy and The Social Reckoning both arrived in theaters on October 9, 2026, and both have received their fair share of fair criticism. So for this review, I shall acknowledge those critiques and then reveal why I was nevertheless ultimately more or less satisfied.

Other Mommy actually had a pretty enticing trailer, but reviews didn’t start arriving until just the day before its release, which is typically not a promising sign. And yeah, as it turned out, this horror tale could have probably benefited from more tightly defined rules about its titular trickster’s abilities. But all of the set pieces were impressively imaginative, and it was nice to see Arian Moayed and Karen Allen show up for much more than expected.

They did okay, I reckon (CREDIT: Sony Pictures)

I certainly wasn’t expecting The Social Reckoning to be on the same level as The Social Network, and yeah, there were some notably tone-deaf moments (the girl intern, mansplaining, happy basketball player). But the journalistic process can still be thrilling, and Bill Burr delivered the performance of a lifetime. The bigger disappointment is of course that the real-life reckoning hasn’t fully happened yet…
