What Won TV? – December 1-December 7, 2013

In this feature, I look back at each day of the past week and determine what shows “won TV” for the night. That is, I consider every episode of television I watched that aired on a particular day and declare which was the best.

Sunday – Bob’s Burgers, duh
Monday – Rick and Morty won me over.
Tuesday – Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Wednesday – Key & Peele
Thursday – The Eric André Show
Friday – Comedy Bang! Bang!, with The Neighbors and The Birthday Boys not too far behind on the most competitive night of last week
Saturday – SNL, by default, but hey, Brasky DID give AIDS back to the monkeys.

SNL Recap December 7, 2013: Paul Rudd/One Direction

The Sound of Music – Live and Condensed
Okay, SNL, you got me.  I was not expecting Dooneese to show up, nor indeed would I have been expecting to like her to show up if I thought she might. B+

Paul Rudd’s Monologue
Interesting to see Paul acknowledge how much he was overshadowed by the previous MG’s.  I guess it really was that obvious.  Oh, and most importantly, David Koechner has finally returned to the SNL stage!  He’s one of the best – if not the best – one-season cast members of all time.  “Why don’t you beat it, Menudo” was fairly well-trod territory, but Will Ferrell delivered it with such conviction. Sunday – Hello Ladies nails its first season finale.
Monday – I’m going to give it to Almost Human for being weirder than HIMYM.
Tuesday – Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Honorable Mention: the last minute of S.H.I.E.L.D., for implying that Agent Coulson is a doll)
Wednesday – The Middle edges out Key & Peele (and The League finale was pretty good, too).Thursday – Parenthood
Friday – Comedy Bang! Bang!, in every alternate reality
Saturday – High School USA! (though SNL had at least 11 minutes of strong material)

He had a real peaceful look on his face before he exploded.

Piers Morgan Live
It would have been nice if in addition to showcasing whatever they wanted to showcase what was in the news this week, they also put Taran’s Piers Morgan to greater use. C

Josh Hutcherson’s Monologue
Having seen The Hunger Games made all the beats of this monologue super obvious.  The key party business was interesting, though. C

Will Forte sang a medley of James Ingram songs on Late Night this week.  I’m not too familiar with Ingram, which I guess makes me crazy.
