Well, hello there! Yes, the rumors are true, I did go see Hadestown: The Musical in a movie theater. I had never previously seen it on Broadway or any other live theatrical venue, though I did have a general idea of what to expect. Here are my biggest takeaways:

-I would’ve guessed ahead of time that André De Shields would be the main singer behind my favorite song, but no, that honor instead goes to Patrick Page as Mr. Hades himself going on about The Wall. What a bass!
-André was great, too, of course, and he did a fine job of ushering his co-stars into the spotlight.
-Let’s all start jumping like Amber Gray as Persephone!
-That “la la la” falsetto from Reeve Carney was kind of terrifying. (In a good way?)
-Eva Noblezada was delivering the sort of face acting that was making me go, “I hope everything works out okay!”

And now you know what I thought about Hadestown: The Musical.

A few days ago, I saw Snow White (the version where Rachel Zegler plays the Friend of Grumpy). Then the very next day, I saw A Minecraft Movie (the one released in 2025, in case you’re reading this in the future). And I couldn’t help but ask myself: would I like to live in either of these magical realms?

Right before seeing Spirited, I walked a few blocks past the theater and picked up a gelato milkshake. It was my first Christmas movie viewing of the season after all, and I wanted to feel festive. Now, it may be true that I didn’t order a candy cane variety or any other seasonal flavor, and it’s also true that I eat ice cream pretty much year-round anyway. But this shake managed to hit the spot I was seeking nonetheless. Anyway, I think the added sugar may have helped me stay awake the whole time, so I have to say thank you baby Jesus, because we’re talking a 2-hour-plus runtime here! Anyway, this riff on A Christmas Carol managed to pull off a minor heist, and the main love story was not what I would have guessed, so it’s got that going for it.
