Every week, I check the schedule of new albums coming out and listen to the ones that catch my ear. Then I make a note throughout the year of the ones that made a strong impression. And then to finalize my Best Albums of 2024 list, I re-listened to everything on that shortlist to confirm whether or not I did in fact like them enough to enshrine them among the crème de la crème.
As for my favorite new songs of the year, they can be hard to find, since I live in a city with reliable public transportation, and thus rarely drive, and thus rarely listen to the radio. So I hope that I’ll encounter some good ones on the albums that I seek out, or that they otherwise reach me via pop cultural osmosis. Also, I try to stick with songs that were released as singles, but it’s okay if they weren’t.
Anyway, here’s the music that happily stuck with me in 2024:
TV
–X-Men ’97 Series Premiere (March 20 on Disney+) – A sequel to the 90s cartoon!
Music
-The Black Crowes, Happiness Bastards
-Kacey Musgraves, Deeper Well
-Justin Timberlake, Everything I Thought I Was
-Tierra Whack, World Wide Whack

Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.
Excellent! March is my favorite month. And the 2024 edition is off to a promising start with a couple of new Saturday Night Live episodes on the docket. The 3/2 show was hosted by Sydney Sweeney, who you might know from the rom-com hit Anyone But You, the wacky superhero flick Madame Web, and the upcoming pregnant nun horror movie Immaculate. I’ve seentwo of those, and I’m excited for the third! I might also start watching that HBO show that she stars on.
Kacey Musgraves was the musical guest, which she’s done twice before. She hails from a magical land named “Golden,” Texas.
And since this episode was indeed hosted by Sydney Sweeney, I’m going to include as much alliteration in my review as I can muster.
Hello, readers, you are now about to read my review of Saturday Night Live‘s Season 47 premiere, which was hosted by Mr. Owen Wilson with musical guest Ms. Kacey Musgraves. I like to mix up my review style every once in a while, so for this episode, I will talk about the sketches in the reverse order in which they aired. I don’t think I’ll be doing that for every episode this season; instead, I’ll be mixing it up … we’ll see how it goes!
Also, I should mention that I’m in the midst of training for the New York City Marathon, so if it feels like my review was written after running double-digit miles, now you know why.

This review was originally published on News Cult in May 2018.
NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then organizes the sketches into the following categories: “Love It” (potentially Best of the Season-worthy), “Keep It” (perfectly adequate), or “Leave It” (in need of a rewrite, to say the least). Then he concludes with assessments of the host and musical guest.
Love It
James Madison High School Graduation – In a spiritual successor to the St. Joseph’s Christmas Mass Spectacular, Beck Bennett gets into the intense voice-over detailing the foibles and high points of a common American ritual. There are the typical goofs: butchering names, falling off the stage, microphone troubles. And then it goes to another, all-time level with the lasers shooting out of the eyes of the kids looking at different cameras.
