It’s Legal for Comedy to be ‘Naked’ Again in 2025

What’s It About?: Carrying on the inimitable legacy of his late father, Lieutenant Detective Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) is the pride of Los Angeles’ Police Squad division. But he and his partner Ed Hocken Jr. (Paul Walter Hauser) – son of Frank Sr.’s old boss – find themselves a bit stymied by their latest case. Or pair of cases, really. Which are really the same case. First there’s a bank robbery in which none of the culprits actually take any money. Then there’s a dead man in an electric car in a ditch in an apparent suicide. But the deceased’s sister (Pamela Anderson) suspects some foul play. And it all leads back to tech mogul Richard Cane (Danny Huston), who’s seeking to electrically revolutionize the world in his image.

What Made an Impression?: Legacy vs. Independence: In one of the first scenes of this rebooted version of The Naked Gun, Drebin Jr. looks at a portrait of his dad and asks him if he can be both exactly the same as him and also completely his own man. That’s basically the core challenge of any legacy sequel, but it’s especially acute when following in the footsteps of one of the most beloved spoof series of all time. Successful comedy thrives on surprise, but you risk alienation if you stray too far from the established formula. Well, I’m here to happily report that Drebin and Company have achieved their goal. This Naked Gun indeed honors the profoundly silly legacy of its predecessors while also working in a sufficiently altered milieu and blazing its own path.
All the Funny: It certainly helps when the crew behind the scenes has a knack for crafting funny business. Akiva Schafer is the key creative voice here, serving as a director and one of three credited screenwriters (along with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand). Schaffer is best known as one-third of The Lonely Island, the crew responsible for Saturday Night Live‘s Digital Shorts era. Unsurprisingly, he brings an omnivorous and shameless approach to the cavalcade of joke-a-minute gags of display. Vocal puns, text puns, visual puns, background gags, running gags, misdirects, hallucinatory diversions, bizarre character beats: if you hate one joke, don’t worry, because the forecast is like mountainous weather. Which is to say, a new joke is coming in just a minute.
A New Drebin for a New Era: The original Naked Gun movies and the Police Squad! TV show were released in a time when fictional police officials were widely accepted as trustworthy authority figures. But the cultural temperature is a little different in 2025. This Naked Gun is hardly a merciless takedown of copaganda, but it does take some genuinely hard shots at Drebin Jr’s extra-legal behavior. Neeson is just as occasionally oblivious and literal-minded as Leslie Nielsen was before him, but he’s also more feral and clearly deserving of being knocked down a few pegs.
L.A. is Full of Characters: Thus far, I’ve mainly talked about the director and the No. 1 Guy on the Call Sheet, without really spotlighting the supporting cast. So let me say: they’re all great! Pamela Anderson is a natural as the femme fatale, and Hauser is always reliable, while Huston and CCH Pounder also clearly understand the assignment of: “play it straight, and the laughs will follow.” Comedy is alive and naked, baby!

Now that I’ve watched Clown in a Cornfield, it’s time to answer the question: would I like to live in a town filled with Frendos? And the answer is: absolutely!

Perhaps that response surprises you, because you never thought that I had a death wish. And you’d be right in that regard. Although perhaps you’ve reasoned that I’ve surmised I would be safe from the massacre since I’m no longer a doofus high schooler. This is all mighty fine deduction, but here’s the thing: I never said I wanted to live among murderous Frendos.

So yeah, as long as we can remove the impalings and the decapitations, then Kettle Springs, Missouri looks like a perfectly idyllic location to inhale some burgers and milkshakes at the local diner and go for a parade. (I also liked it when Mandy’s dad from Georgie & Mandy showed up.)

Spring Cleaning 2024 Movie Review Round-Up

There are a handful of movies I saw in May that I haven’t shared any extended thoughts about yet, so here’s a Spring Cleaning-themed review roundup. Typically May is considered part of the summer movie season, but that leaves short shrift to the time of year when it actually is spring. If May 1-Labor Day is Summer Movie Season, and October-December is Fall Movie Season, and Thanksgiving-New Year’s is Holiday Movie Season, and January-February is Awards Holdovers/Winter Dumping Ground Season, well then, we really only March and April for Spring Movie Season, and a good chunk of March is spent fretting about the Oscars! So let’s give some love to the month with the best weather of the year (apologies to those of you with vernal allergies) and check in on the May spring movies.

‘Abigail’ Takes a Few Bites, and It Sure Gets Messy

Rating: R for Buckets of Blood, and Even Some Guts, and All the Attendant F-Bombs

What’s It About?: A ragtag group of criminals who are the best at what they do are assembled for a seemingly simple job: kidnap 12-year-old ballerina Abigail (Alisha Weir) and demand a $50 million ransom from her very powerful father. They hole up in a mansion for what’s meant to be a straightforward babysitting gig and assume Rat Pack-inspired codenames to hide their true identities. But that’s not amore, because it soon becomes clear that they’re in much more than they’ve bargained for when Abigail reveals the full extent of her identity. Could it be that this crew has more in common that they realize and that they might just have the right pop culture-inspired know-how to escape this house of horrors? Considering that Abigail was directed by the savvy team behind Ready or Not and the last couple of Screams, signs point to yes!

What Made an Impression?: Twist Premise: If you’ve ever listened to the podcast Scott Hasn’t Seen, then you may have encountered a pet theory of its co-host Scott Aukerman. The gist is that movies shouldn’t have titles, but instead just be identified by numbers, e.g. “Movie #10,607.” Aukerman’s point is that it’s best for audiences to experience movies with absolutely zero expectations and therefore maximum potential for surprise. If that idea appeals to you, then you should stop reading this review RIGHT NOW if you have any interest in seeing Abigail. But if you already regularly go to the movie theater or watch TV, then chances are you’ve already seen the ubiquitous trailer, which gives away the big twist at the heart of the concept. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with knowing about the title dancer’s bloodsucking tendencies when entering the theater, but it is worth noting that the script doesn’t rush into the reveal. I loved seeing the Abigail trailer as often as I did, but it would’ve been nice to have been able to test out Mr. Aukerman’s theory.
Let’s Make a Deal: When Abigail shows what appears to be its full hand, it turns into a full-bore cat-and-mouse most dangerous game as a little predator nibbles away at her prey. But it actually has another ace or two up its sleeve. You see, Abigail’s father is a notorious gangster businessman whose elimination of his enemies has become a bit of an urban legend. Or it would be a legend, if it weren’t all true. That wrinkle might make it seem like the bloodlust is even more inescapable, but it also opens up some avenues for wheeling and dealing. Abigail may love playing with her food, but there are certain frustrations that come with being a preteen for centuries. And while you’d be wise to be skeptical about her or anyone else of her ilk when they say they’ll let you go, their offers do make for some intriguing negotiation.
Theater of Blood: With her levitational abilities, bone-twisting dance skills, and telepathic manipulation, Abigail’s powers are about as boundless as you could possibly fear they’d be. But it’s essential for vampires to have some vulnerability, and that’s where Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett excel. Let’s just say, if you manage to expose Abigail to sunlight or poke her with a stake, she does not go gently. If you enjoyed the death scenes in Ready or Not, then you’ll lap up Abigail as quite the encore. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett aren’t reinventing the vampire wheel here (who could at this point?), but they’re certainly pouring all of their blood and guts into it.

This Is a Movie Review: ‘Tragedy Girls’ is Pleasantly Gory But Hampered by a Muddled Social Message

Is it possible to be so addicted to social media status that it drives you to serial killing? Tragedy Girls sure seems to think so. But the way it presents this scenario is a bit of a chicken-or-the-egg situation. When we meet high school besties McKayla (Alexandra Shipp) and Sadie (Brianna Hildebrand), they are already both rising Instagram stars AND in the midst of a killing spree. Their attention for fame does not fuel their bloodlust so much as the former provides a channel to express the latter. Any satirical point about how social media obsessions can be deadly is blunted by how much their murderousness is just a part of their nature.

But maybe Tragedy Girls isn’t really meant to be a takedown of what the kids are up to these days. Maybe it is more just the latest profile of banal evil that lurks in supposedly picture-perfect suburbia. Shipp and Hildebrand are certainly committed enough to pull that off, their delightedly and delightfully psychotic performances the highlight of the film. They seem to be operating in a bit of a Zodiac vibe, where part of the thrill is acting as amateur journalists of their own spree.

That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t much matter when everything else around them is a bit too scattershot. Famous faces like Josh Hutcherson and Craig Robinson pop up, only to be quickly dispatched. In the case of the latter, his presence makes sense, since he is also a producer. But Hutch is clearly there as a favor to someone so that there is a big name to be splashy with promotional materials, but in the actual product, he is a distraction from what could have been an unassuming, low-budget charmer.

Tragedy Girls is worth recommending somewhat for the fun of its murderous set pieces. The gore is smeared with squishy goodness and fully imbued with glee. McKayla and Sadie are practically magical in how clean and precise their slicing and dicing (and cleanup!) skills are. It’s enough to remind us the joy of feeding our taste for violence on screen and the safety of eschewing it in real life.

Tragedy Girls is Recommended If You Like: Final Destination at its most cartoonish, the Child’s Play series, Jennifer’s Body
