Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Martin Short/Hozier

Should Hozier be called “Hoser” when he’s standing next to a Canadian? (CREDIT: NBC/Screenshot)

Jeff “jmunney” Malone watches every new episode of Saturday Night Live and then reviews all the sketches and segments according to a “wacky” theme.

If you’re a fan of Saturday Night Live, you might already know that Canada-born Martin Short joined the cast of SNL back in the fall of 1984 and remained for just that one season. He’s since made plenty of guest appearances, including four hosting gigs between 1986 and 2022. And now he’s back in front for the Christmas 2024 episode. That makes for #5, which is kind of a big deal.

Another thing you might know if you’re a devoted SNL fan: Irish-born Andrew John Hozier-Byrne – who goes mononymously by “Hozier” – made his Studio 8H debut a full ten years ago. So this episode pairing him with Marty is in fact his second.

Since this episode is the last before Christmas this year, I’ll be reviewing each sketch by answering the following question: How nice and/or naughty was it?

Heading into the Christmas break, it seemed like I had a lot more new movies to catch up on than usual. Or maybe it was actually a normal amount, and I was just cataloging my filmgoing plans a little more closely than I typically do. Either way, it took me about a month, but I’ve finally checked off everything that was on my to-watch list. So let’s run down some quick thoughts on all of them!

Jeff’s Wacky SNL Review: Steve Martin Short/Brandi Carlile

The long and short of it is, the December 10, 2022 episode of Saturday Night Live has been hosted by Steve Martin (a long fellow) AND Martin Short (his last name is “Short”). And what’s the story, morning glory (because I watched the show on Sunday morning)? Brandi Carlile is the musical guest! I believe that this lineup is worth the price of admission.

Because this episode had two guests, I will be reviewing each sketch with two words each.

Cold Opening – The New York Children’s Chorus performs “Silent Night”
At first, I assumed this performance was in response to the Connecticut shooting.  Then I figured it was just be the kids singing.  But as it turns out, it probably was in response to Connecticut.  Anyway, they sounded good.

Martin Short’s Monologue
What really made this monologue work was the timing of the revelation of the guest appearances:  Oh, Kristen’s stopping back.  And Jimmy’s here, too!  And Tom Hanks!  And Sam Jackson?!  (Oh, but he’s too scary to kiss.) B+
